Confession time: I’ve been binging Below Deck like it’s my job. There’s just something about watching people try to keep it together on a floating luxury hotel that is just so satisfying to watch.
Randomly, a motivational speaker showed up in an episode I watched and just radiated positivity 24/7. It got me thinking (and yes, my husband has pointed this out more than once): maybe I could be a motivational speaker too. But I’d never fit the “toxic positivity” mold. I’m not about pretending everything’s sunshine and super-yachts. Most of us are just trying to get through Tuesday, not dropping $200K for a weekend at sea.
Toxic Positivity could probably be it's own article. Adding it to my list...
Here’s the deal: I want to be the person who keeps it honest. The one who says, “Yep, sometimes life is hard, sometimes you just want to hide in the bathroom, and that’s okay.” I only have advice to share because I’m in the trenches with you, figuring it out one awkward, messy day at a time.
And honestly, watching Below Deck is a masterclass in career transitions. You see these new deckhands and stews thrown into the deep end, expected to learn fast. The only way it works? When the folks who’ve been there actually take the time to show them the ropes. If they don’t... cue the drama (and maybe a few screaming matches, because reality TV never disappoints).
Another thing they face on Below Deck? Bringing work home with them...literally. But honestly, we do it too! For example, I’m writing this while I’m supposed to be hanging out with my friends, watching Taskmaster. (Okay, I’m also ADHD, so multitasking is basically my superpower.)
Let’s just give ourselves permission to slow down and breathe a little. No need to be “on” all the time.
And, of course, my Below Deck-inspired newsletter wouldn’t be complete without a little nautical cheese: If you’re facing uncharted waters and things get a little choppy, reach out to Harden Consulting. (I know. But I had to.)
So, if you’re looking for a little real talk and some practical “how do I get through this week” wisdom, you’re in the right place. Let’s figure it out together.
